Lithuanian history

Our selection of books and periodicals covers all the aspects of Lithuanian and Baltic history from archaeology to the present day. From the beginning, the Baltic tribes found themselves located at a crossroad between Germans, Slavs and Finns and most of Lithuanian history is a story of withstanding, surviving and recovering. Other topics _ Christianity, national minorities, emigration and anti-Soviet resistance _ add to this story and are well covered by publications in translation.

Baltų menas / Art of the Balts

Adomas Butrimas

The publication pays gretest attention to the Baltic art of Metals epoque, the periods when main differences between East and West Balts became prominent, when specific Baltic cultures had already formed or when separate Baltic tribes with their typical features of culture and art started forming. But when it was necessary for the topic chosen, not only development of variuos pieces of Baltic jewellery was overviewed in the clearly settled Baltic world, but also traditions of using certain materials (e.g. amber) or beginnings of particular types of artifacts in the region later surely inhabited by Balts. The material of non-Baltic orgin is as well incluted, but only as examples, besides, only those which were found in Baltic lands or in the old Lithuanian state established by Balts - the Great Duchy of Lithuania in the 13th-15th centuries.
