Description

Redcliffe Salaman (1874–1955) was a man of many facets: an English country gentleman, a doctor, and a leading scientist who spent much of his life on pioneering research into breeding blight-free strains of potatoes. He was also Jewish. The Last Anglo-Jewish Gentleman is the first biography of Salaman ever published.

Redcliffe Salaman was a major figure in the Anglo-Jewish world of the twentieth century, making innumerable contributions to a wide range of activities in Jewish life in Britain as well as in the attempts to help German Jews, particularly scholars. His groundbreaking book, History and Social Influence of the Potato, was first published in 1949 and has been in print ever since. His wife Nina was a feminist, poet, essayist, translator of medieval Hebrew poetry, and the first (and only) woman to deliver a sermon in an Orthodox synagogue in Britain.

The Last Anglo-Jewish Gentleman offers a compelling biography of a unique individual but also presents a fascinating window into the everyday life of Jews in Britain during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
